Definition: Transition Map
Let and be two charts for an -manifold such that the intersection is nonempty.
The transition map from to is the homeomorphism which maps the image of under to its image under by composing and the inverse of :
INTUITION
The transition map is simply a change-of-coordinates operation, which converts coordinates from the coordinate system to the coordinate system . However, since coordinates on a manifold are only locally defined, such a change of coordinates makes sense only for those points which have coordinates in both systems, i.e. those points which belong to .
