Definition: Coordinate Representation of a Function
Let be a real vector-valued function on a -manifold and let be a chart for .
The coordinate representation of on is the real vector function obtained by the compositions of and the inverse of .
INTUITION
Although all points on a chart can be uniquely represented by their coordinates, the does not act on coordinates - it acts on points. Hence, we need a way to convert coordinates to the points they represent before can be used. This is precisely what does. If we are given coordinates , we can pass them to to obtain the point which they represent. After having converted the coordinates to the point , we can invoke , i.e. we can obtain the value .
The coordinate representation does all of this in one single step. It takes coordinates , converts them to the point which they represent and then returns the value of at .
